CE Description

This presentation will provide an overview of the major changes and new additions in the soon to be published 2026 FGI Codes for the Planning and Design of Hospitals, Outpatient Settings and Residential Care and Support Settings. It will include a discussion on the issues facing the Facilities Guidelines Institute as it moves forward with code development; a look at FGI’s restructuring of its content and property: a discussion of the hot topics and major changes in all three editions of the FGI standards including changes to the Glossary definitions, chapter reorganizations; complete new chapters and the introduction of new handbooks for each of the 2026 editions. 

It will also include an update on changes to ANSI/ASHRAE/ASHE 170-2025 and a brief update on the current state of the New Jersey department of Community Affairs – Health Care Plan Review Unit. 

CEC Learning Objectives 

  1. Understand FGI’s current situation regarding copyrights and ownership of its content and property. 
  2. Understand the outcome of FGI’s restructuring of the 3 major standards and the difference in content between the basic codes and the handbooks. 
  3. Understand the hot topics and major changes to the 3 codes and how they differ from the 2022 editions of the Guidelines. 
  4. Understand the changes to ANSI/ASHRAE/ASHE 170 and how they relate to the FGI codes. 

Speaker Bio

Mr. Uhaze is a registered architect and has worked in the field of healthcare design for the past 43yrs. For 28 of those years he was employed by the State of New Jersey as the Authority Having Jurisdiction over the construction and renovation of every healthcare facility in the state. While with the State of New Jersey, he served on numerous committees including the Barrier Free Committee, Fire Safety Committee, and the Codes Advisory Board. He is a 29 year member of the Facility Guidelines Institute-Health Guidelines Revisions Committee, and has served as the Co-Chair of the Hospital Document Sub-committee, a member of the Steering Committee, 2018 Edition Vice Chairman, and as Chairman of the 2022 Edition. 

He has also served as a 20 year member of the NCPCCI Test Development Committee which writes and maintains the national construction code inspectors certification examinations used throughout the U.S. for the licensing of building inspectors. He is a frequent speaker throughout the Delaware Valley area as well as nationally and is currently providing consultation to the healthcare industry regarding the FGI Guidelines, NJ State Standards, NFPA Standards and the International Building Code through his company, Health Facilities Design Consulting.
