A message from Bob Neumann…

We now have a source for the Watch we give out as an award for Facility Manager of the Year. We have caught up to 2016 but some of the early recipients have asked to purchase a watch for their award year. If you are interested, please send me your name and the year you received the award and I'll arrange to get one and have it engraved and have the treasurer bill you for the amount.

Update on the hospital lead in drinking water bill A4139

We checked with Assemblyman Daniel Benson's (a Primary Sponsor of the Bill A4139) office on January 8, 2018. This bill, which would require healthcare facilities to test for and remediate lead in drinking water and disclose test results, was not scheduled for any of the current legislative sessions through January 8th. The bill will have to be reintroduced. No time frame could be given at this time as to when that would happen. We will keep you apprised of any changes.

Joint Commission eliminates Plans for Improvement

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has asked the Joint Commission to make several changes to its Statement of Conditions process, and the Joint Commission will no longer consider hospital Plans for Improvement (PFIs) starting August 1. Instead, all life safety deficiencies will need to be corrected within 60 days, although a time-limited waiver process will be available through CMS regional offices. George Mills, MBA, FASHE, CEM, CHFM, CHSP, director of engineering with the Joint Commission’s Department of Engineering, announced the major changes at the ASHE Annual Conference.

Under the new process:

The changes will be effective August 1, Mills said. The Joint Commission is an accrediting organization that has deemed authority from CMS and must meet CMS requirements. Mills said the PFI process can still be used as an internal management process.

ASHE will continue to keep members updated about this important change.

ASHE has announced that the Healthcare Facilities Management Society of New Jersey has been awarded "Platinum Level" status for its participation in ASHE’s “Levels of Affiliation” program. ASHE’s Platinum Level of Affiliation award is ASHE's highest level of chapter recognition.
